Notice of Race - Sailing Events for Club Members

Burton Sailing club holds short and long series events for club members throughout the year. Classes of boat that regularly field three or more craft will be racing for a class position as well as a Portsmouth Yardstick Handicap position.

Burton Sailing Club  will organise race series on Foremark Reservoir for the series quoted in the series summary table below, the duration of the series in this table are approximate, the exact dates, number of races and the start times are reported in the Club Calendar on this website.

The races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing and the Sailing Instructions of Burton Sailing Club. 

Members and guests of Burton Sailing Club, Open Meeting entrants and Day Sailors are eligable provided that they:

  • Agree to be bound by the Racing Rules of Sailing of Sailing and the Sailing Instructions of Burton Sailing Club.
  • Have a valid measurement certificate for the boat
  • Have current insurance for the boat with third party cover of at least £2,000,000
  • Accept responsibility for the safety and management of the boat

 

2013 is split into the following series (see the race calendar for exact dates):

Winter Oct-Dec

Sundays, 3 races

20 Oct - 15 Dec (27 races 11 to count)

Wednesday Apr-Sept

1 race at 6:00PM, 6:30PM or 7PM (see below) 

3 Apr - 18 Sept (25 races 10 to count)

Novice Jun-Sept

2 or 3 races on selected Sat. afternoons. 1st race not before 1PM

31 Mar - 31 Aug, 40% (rounded up) of the series races to count

All handicap racing will be using the current Portsmouh Yardstick handicaps, unless otherwise stated in this NoR.

Saturday Racing

Junior/Novice racing will be on Saturday afternoons with two or three races depending on conditions.  The OOD will give an informal briefing in the clubhouse or dinghy park prior to the racing explaining some aspect of racing, for example the start sequence (flags and horns), course board or racing tactics. Courses will be short (around 30mins) simple courses

Sunday Racing

Sunday racing will consist of three races as follows:

 Whilst in BST (daylight Savings time)

  • Race 1 not before 11:00
  • Race 2 not before 13:30
  • Race 3 to follow race 2.

Whilst in GMT

  • Race 1 not before 11:00
  • Race 2 not before 13:00
  • Race 3 to follow race 2 back to back.

The club also holds several one day events through the year where the 3 Sunday races make up a short event with 2 races to count (1 discarded result). All three races still, of course, count for the series.

Wednesday Racing

The first two Wednesdays will start at 6:30PM. The last three Wednesdays will start at 6PM, the rest of the series will start at 7PM (see the race calendar).

There will be two separate results for each series one based on Portsmouth Yardstick and the other on personal handicap adjustments to the Portsmouth Yardstick. The personal handicap is adjusted after each race a competitor finishes.

Special Events

There are several special events through the year. They are listed below and the dates are stated on the club calendar:

  • Novice Champs - A one day series on a Saturday
  • Regatta - A weekend event of varying format a separate NoR will be issued ahead of the event.
  • Ernie Hewkin Memorial - a single pursuit race held on the Regatta weekend.
  • President's Cup - A one day event on a Sunday
  • RNLI Cup - A one day event on a Sunday
  • Commodore's Cup - a one day event on a Sunday
  • Beach Bum - a Weekend event of varying informal format that will be advertised prior to the event
  • Junior Champs - A one day event
  • Foremark Cup - a one day event on a Sunday
  • Christmas Cracker - a single Pursuit race held on the last Sunday before Christmas

 

Open Sailing Events

The club holds several regional, traveller and sometimes championship events mostly for the classes of dinghy sailed at the club but sometimes for other classes. The club often holds RYA squad training or race events. [open events]
